Pontremoli and the area around it was inhabited in prehistoric times. Pontemoli became an important market town in the 11th and 12th centuries, a place where the main roads of the mountain passes came together. It's castle was built in the 11th century to control the network of roads. The Duomo, or cathedral, was built in the 17th century and its theater, built in the 18th century, was the first in the region. Churches and buildings are both Romanesque and Baroque style.
