Carrefour Today

I needed a big shop today and as there is no Target here, I am forced to go to the largest store in the world, Carrefour, Antibes. Many things are closed on Wednesday and Thursday this week. Wednesday is WW11 Victory Day. I expect to be carried on the French's shoulders all day in thanks for our American sacrifice. It extends into Thursday for some reason.  Anyway, everyone needs to hurry up and shop as all will be closed for 2 days.
I am always exhausted by the time I leave Carrefour.

Today, an older man that was with his wife...looked me right in the eye and asked me something in 2 sentences. I had no idea what he said. There was a bout a 15 second pause. We were face to face about 12 inches apart.. What came out of my mouth was." Je suis Americane". I don't know why. I should have asked him to speak slower or repeat what he said.
He gave me a big smile and a chuckle and said...oh...never mind, in English. I walked away, as I often do, cursing my inabilities.
I ran into him again in the vegetable aisle. He was standing next to me waiting for the scale to be free, I purposefully bumped his elbow slightly . He said 'Voila!" ... We laughed. I asked him in French what squash is called. ( I was holding yellow squash) He and his wife helped me...courgette...It seemed funny telling him that in English, it's called a squash. The French always laugh at funny American words like that.
He and I kept running into each other and he would always say "Voila!"

My friend S's Husband, A, says that I tease or play with the French...I like to give them a run for their euro.
I also learned that when I go up to someone and ask where something is..it is impolite to say...can you tell me where the sea salt is? You MUST say Bonjour first. This has happened to me a few times. I get a forceful BONJOUR from the person I ask the question of. OK...got it now!
I have also gotten much bolder about using my credit card...I can see that when I was unsure, I was getting resistance from cashiers. Today, I stood there in a more positive / matter of a fact mode and I had no problem.
