Lost dog...almost got bit.

How do I get involved in these situations? I took the dogs down to the river this morning. I stopped to drop off garbage and this dog appeared. I was initially afraid of him. He has a huge head, like a mastiff and a smaller body. He is still somewhat young as he has huge paws. He didn't act aggressive. I could tell he was hungry. You can see his ribs. 

He looks like "Hooch" in the face.

This tested my French. I went to the vets and explained to them. I spoke to Monsieur Lambert and he made a few calls. I gave the dog some hard food and he chowed it right down. I tried to get him into the car....no go.

My neighbor came out, I had never met her before. She is nice. She had seen the dog around for a few days. She had been feeding him too and was petting him, so I decided I would pet him too. The municipal police came and would not get out of their car ( out of fear, i'm sure) . They called the dog catcher, but he is very far away...so we wait.

I managed to get one of Kate's old collars on him..( pink!) and we got him tied up to the post till they come. I didn't want to leave a mess so I went to take the little plastic bag away that the food was in , just the empty bag. 

The dog turned and snapped at me. He just did it to scare me away....not to hurt me. He keeps staring at me and trying to play with me. He kept putting his paw on me...but after he snapped, that's it for me. I don't take any chances and warned the French woman to be careful. I do not want to see them take the dog away. I think there will be a fight. It's sad...but one snap is all that I'm willing to chance.

I can't help every dog.

I know the French do the right thing when it comes to dogs, so I wish him luck. He seems like a big teddy bear, but afraid. 

It did force me to speak quiet a bit of French. 

Update; BEfore I went off to the movies, the dog was still there. The neighbor is on it though. When I cam back after the film, it was dark and he was gone. They either came to get him and took him to a shelter or she took him in to her garage. My stomach is sick from worry.
