It's hard to believe that I just arrived yesterday. I have seen so much. This morning I went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I got there early to avoid the crowds. It's a beautifully done museum. I really like the artifacts along with the art. You can take pictures, I was surprised.
I went through quickly as I am still a little sick and I really couldn't sleep, although the hotel was very comfortable.
What I liked the most...I liked the Napoleon Portraits and the Napoleon objects, ie his pistols. I liked the crying figures , crying for a dead queen. I really loved these 2 paintings with Egyptian subjects. More to come on that. There was a beautiful metal bowl from roman times, van goths self portrait, the genre paintings, Vermeer still life's...and more.
It's an interesting museum.
Then, I went and had pancakes...really, A pancake, in a sweet little traditional restaurant. I was not what I expected. It was more of a big crepe with bacon in the middle. It was petty good. The restaurant is in an interesting spot. It draws people in in a way. When I was having my pancake, i sat at the bar and watched as many people came in, almost sucked in, everyone was unsure of themselves and what they were doing there...do you serve food Do you have Coke Free, can I get a soup or a sandwich...and all the people were English speaking. The same thing happened to me. " can I still get pancakes?
I raced back to the hotel, they called a taxi, a big grey Mercedes. The guy new every street in the city. The rental place was in a very obscure area. There was a prison that was very tall and surrounded by bard desire and right next door was student housing in cargo containers, many of them. They looked so claustrophobic . There were only windows on the end you would open. They were put into blocks facing each other.
Anyway, I picked up my Ford, and headed off south back towards the airport and toward Lisse and Noordwijk on the North Sea, where I am staying tonight.
More to come...
