I just consulted the map and drove through the dark and rainy day on a road out of town along the beautiful river. It was green everywhere with early spring flowers.
I chose a route uphill that would go through The Maures Massif and then down the other side to the sea. The height only reaches 2,600 feet at the highest, but it is really dramatic with cliffs and winding roads. It's no mans land and a bit scary on a dreary rainy day.
This area has had many forest fires.
