I set out in the rain on a Saturday, driving west to Provence. I had hoped to see a botanical garden in Rayol, but it was really a foggy, rainy day so I just drove at whim.
I arrived mid-day at this pretty little town, right on a rushing river (The Real Collobrieres)
. Collobrieres in the Massif des Maures. From what I read, it is an ancient town ( 11th century) that was the first in France to learn to use cork in wine bottles from the Spanish. The Cork and Chestnut Trees are beautiful here and they specialize in Chestnut products. I passed on any of those.
It does have some Roman Artifacts and is said to date back to Prehistoric Times.
This day, it was vacant except for the restaurants and bars which were filled with locals. Check out the sculpture in the main square fountain on the boy holding a fish. This is the Town Square, Hotel De Ville as they are called.
