Yesterday we drove up to Vence to go on a hike. I had found the trail head last weekend and was excited about being out in the woods on a beautiful day. We followed the trail to Saint Paul. It went down hill through a beautiful moss covered woods. I let Emile off the leash as we were really in the thick of the woods. We could hear a river or a stream below ( Le Cagnes?) We came to an intersection and we followed the sign toward St. Paul. I was envisioning a grand view from up on a high peak....but the trail brought us up into a neighborhood that was a mix of beautiful gated villas and ramshackle hovels with hanging laundry and beat up cars. The area had the feeling of a summer camping area in winter. We passed one barking dog behind a gate...the further we went, the barking dogs increased. I had both dogs on their leash at that point.
This trail led me right back to the main road we drove in. Not a very busy road, but a disappointment as we had wanted the woods. The trail signs continued, so we kept going. There was a fork in the road and from that spot, you could see over the houses out to the sea. There never was a very good picture taking opportunity. We kept walking, trying to keep to the side as the cars kept coming.
I gave up when we go to another cross roads and two huge long haired German Shepherds appeared behind a wire fence...and they were angry as hell. There was a dense hedge on the inside of the fence and these two dogs were ripping it up in their furor towards up. I decided we better turn around, so we had to pass them again. There was a spot in the fence that was clear, maybe 4 feet up, that seemed to me a place these dogs could get over and easily jump down to the street in front of us.
I stopped. took out my mace, flicked the nozzle into position and ran with the dogs past.
I was ready for them. Luckily their game was just acting tough....they did not want to get into a confrontation.
We made our way back to the car and that was the end of our hike.
