When in a foreign country and you are on the Internet, you must go by their search option, unless you figure out a way around it. I mostly use the search engine with the big Y. When here, they switch me over to French Y. When I try to search for something, say "market days in Antibes France", I get one obscure store , that can't believe that it's name has come up in a search. But, if I can get over to the US version of Y, the you get the info in every conceivable way for pages and pages.
It's similar to my experience on Craigs List. It's all there, all of the categories, but when you click on them, they are blank. ( I did click on a catagory that was called " Rant" in which I found a hearty bashing of America with a picture of a man with his head buried in the sand like an ostrich. )
Also, Yelp is just a skinny skeleton with no information that I am working diligently to fill in...I look at it like a coloring book. I go to a place, add pictures and a review. It's fun.
Where are they hiding all of the information?
I went into a store in Nice yesterday that looked a little like a hardware store. I am worried about loosing keys and need to get duplicates. This store was jammed packed full of stuff, and everything was expensive. I asked the girl behind the counter in very knock kneed French if they made keys, at first it looked like they did, she put what she was doing away so she could help me...but then she questioned me again ( in ENGLISH!!!!! Will it ever stop?) and I repeated again in French with a little more confidence...and she said No! And dismissed me.
Where are they hiding things?
What does it all mean? Do the french have a secret network of information that I don't know about? Someone suggested to me that I look in the yellow pages...I'm going to have a little look in them today and see what's going on there.
Another thought...they seem to be hiding the french language from me too. I am trying really hard to speak as much as I can, but the french always want to convert to English when they hear me trying to communicate. I'm trying not to allow that anymore or I will never learn french. I need to find places to go where no one speaks English. I was thinking, a bowling alley, can you bowl alone? I would be an oddity in a bowling alley. I don't bowl very well. but hey, Didn't Americans invent bowling? Wouldn't that give me a little cache? What would I wear? I could also fill this in on Yelp and take pictures too. Perhaps I will give it a try on Thursday night.
I am also open for suggestions if anyone reading this can think of anywhere I can immerse myself in the culture besides supermarkets and restaurants.
.
Flea markets work for me. The people at the stalls are a captive audience - stuck in their booths all day - and if they have unusual stuff, it can be a good vocabulary/culture lesson.
